Description

Mona Eltahawy is an award-winning writer and outspoken feminist, focusing on Arab and Muslim issues and global feminism. Following her involvement in the Arab Spring in November 2011 Egyptian riot police beat her, breaking her left arm and right hand, sexually assaulted her, and she was detained for 12 hours by the military. Mona was one of Newsweek magazine’s 150 Fearless Women of 2012.

She will talk about her recent book Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution.

The Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit (CWASU) is part of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at London Metropolitan University, and is recognised as a centre of excellence, with an international reputation for research, evaluation, training and consultancy. Established in 1987, CWASU has over two decades of experience in conducting independent feminist research that creates useful knowledge for policy makers, practitioners, survivors, supporters and activists. CWASU is the only research unit in Europe that integrates a focus on all forms of violence against women and child abuse. We have been at the forefront of developing innovative methodologies, and continue to explore new ways of creating and analysing knowledge.

CWASU has a vibrant postgraduate culture; the unit was the first in Europe to run the MA in Woman and Child Abuse, and has eleven PhD students. We have also welcomed post-doctoral visiting researchers from Europe, Latin America and Central Asia.
